Powerful and beautifully observed, ‘The Woman Under the Ground’ is novelist Megan Taylor’s first collection of short stories. The writing is brooding and mysterious with finely drawn characters, so often the victims of absence and loss: a child taken to a neglected museum by her forsaken father; a woman revisiting the scene of an ended affair; a couple taking a road trip to try to reconcile the death of their daughter...

From dark adult secrets to night visitors to the dangerous passions of small girls, these stories explore fractured relationships and moments of self revelation with an uncanny honesty and insight.

Debut novel by Notts based writer Michael R D Smith.

Toby Malkin, a young and talented lawyer, expects everything in life to go his way.  Maria Cracolicci, a hapless secretary, has learned to expect far less.  But when a set-back to Malkin’s progress unleashes the full, destructive force of his ambition, Maria feels compelled to stand up to him, however dangerous this may be.  She confides in attractive young colleague Tom Elliott but her stubborn tenacity puts their new friendship to the test.

Maria must expose the truth about Malkin before she is crushed like everyone else in his path but she needs to reconcile her differences with Tom to achieve this.

Stylish, simmering and sexy, The Deed Room is a story of intrigue, murder, deception and romance. Set in Nottingham in the world of corporate law, this compelling novel builds to a dramatic and unexpected climax.

Listen to an extract read by the author on Weather-eye.

Nottingham writer Nigel Pickard's brilliant second novel is a must read. Provocative yet entertaining, his intelligent prose is always utterly convincing.

Thanks to Nottingham Writers' Studio for hosting a launch on January 21st of 'The Dawning', the second novel by Nottingham writer Megan Taylor, published by Weathervane Press.

Megan read a brief extract from the novel, talked about its genesis and answered questions.

Set in the Peak District, the idea for the story came to Megan on the way home from a visit to the area. It was growing dark and she noticed a large isolated house with brightly lit windows, which gave the place an air of mystery and at the same time vulnerability. She imagined a young boy walking out of the back door, into a large, neglected snow covered back garden. In that moment, the story was born.
